It is the flagship station of Cumulus Media's (then known as Westwood One) New York City market. Z100 is famous for being an alternative rock station, but also plays hip hop music and top 40 music in addition to its alternative rock format. The music and programming of Z100 are primarily drawn from new and recent music. As of April 2010, the station has an Adult Top 40 radio format. General format (2007) Until May 2007, the station aired an alternative rock format and was known as the "Z-100" station. Alternative rock and even more varied music was heard until March 2007 when the station changed its format to Adult Top 40, which gradually intensified over the next year. In June 2007, Z100's main competitor, WZLX, dropped Adult Top 40 from its playlist (with the last song of the day on the dial being "What I Like About You" by The Romantics).
